A motor vehicle inspection is a thorough check of a vehicle’s mechanical and safety systems to ensure it meets Ontario’s safety standards. It is often required for licensing, registration, or selling a vehicle.

Inspections are typically required:

• When registering a vehicle in Ontario for the first time.
• When transferring ownership of a used vehicle.
• For vehicles involved in salvage or repairable write-offs before re-registration.
• For commercial vehicles to ensure compliance with safety standards.

An inspection covers:

• Brakes: Pads, rotors, and overall braking performance.
• Tires: Tread depth, condition, and proper inflation.
• Lights: Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals.
• Suspension: Shocks, struts, and alignment.
• Exhaust system: Leaks and emissions compliance.
• Steering: Functionality and safety.
• Body and frame: Structural integrity.
• Windshield and windows: Visibility and damage.

Inspections must be conducted by a licensed mechanic at a certified inspection station authorized by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

A standard inspection typically takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the vehicle’s condition and the complexity of the issues being assessed.

If your vehicle fails, the mechanic will provide a detailed report of the issues that need to be addressed. Once repairs are completed, the vehicle must be re-inspected to ensure compliance with safety standards.
